The Italian Garden, established by Hatti Pegram, specialises in designer pasta, sauces and delicatessen imported from Italy. It is an expression of "Living Philosophy", the title of a university textbook written by her partner, Prof. Ray Billington, and used as an aid to resolving life's problems, particularly moral ones. Taking this a step further, it became obvious that a way of life which took account of how we live and relate to others might also be enhanced by enjoying the preparation, cooking, eating and sharing of food as the Italians do, sitting together around the family table, eating food lovingly prepared and discussing issues keenly held. Idealistic? maybe: but it does happen and very rewarding it is too: a mind and body philosophy, sincerely held, which underlies The Italian Garden. You can, of course, just enjoy the food for its own sake, which will leave you gastronomically satisfied; but at its best it is an experience which relates to the whole person.
