History
Just as the surrounding area is steeped in history, Wilton Court has a rich sense of the past. Wilton Court was originally a Magistrates Court . What is now the Riverview restaurant and bar was once the court room while the bedrooms directly above were the magistrates chambers. Here the original 16th century stone fire places have been restored. In the cellar below a passageway that has now been blocked off led through to the jail accross the road. Wilton castle once occupied by the Longchamps, De Grey and Brydges families is a short walk from the hotel.
Of equal historical interest is the Wilton Bridge built to cross over to Ross on Wye. Before this time, the Wilton Court river bank was the main fording point ahead of the ferry and later barges making Wilton an important part of the trading route.
